It Screams...Happy Halloween

We had a pumpkin carving contest today, this was my entry. Voting is tomorrow, it's not my best effort but given the time restraints... and mostly freehanded too! Will update with possibly better picture and if I win the jelly bean gift basket or not - heheh.

Stockings are the dumbest invention in the world.

Caution: girly post

They are never the right size or colour and tear too easily. Maybe it's just me... I don't like them. I'm wearing a pair that makes my legs look too pasty. And they're pretty pasty to begin with, despite a good summer. And I'm only wearing them because I'm wearing a 'professional' outfit today. Bleh. Knee-high stockings are also a close second. Yech.

I found out that The Bay now has Gucci Envy Me in stock. Yay!! I first noticed it in the British Airways Duty Free Catalogue on the way to Portugal, and got a sample whiff at Harrods, but didn't buy it at that point... but oh... smells so nice. So I was overjoyed when I found out that it's now in Canada. Mmm. (Did not succumb to retail addiction, though.)

Why is it I can never find the nail polish remover when I need it? Why why why?

You win some, you lose some...

or in this case, lose stuff and learn stuff: lost my cute turquoise leather coin purse that had about $12.00, my Visa, debit card, and driver's licence. Don't know what happened to it - it was with me at Safeway last night, but not in my bag where I thought I had put it. So either it is lost in City Square somewhere, or in between the cracks of my car seats (which I have already checked). Sooooo sad. Not so much about the $12.00, or the cards, because those can be replaced... but I got that coin purse in London! And it was so cuuuuuuute.

So I've cancelled my cards and gone to replace my DL - I should get everything back next week sometime... and JMuss is going to look in Oasis to see if they still have them (or similar). Thanks babe!

Today I learned that Reith is a town in Austria. Cool.

Alterna-blog

Complete with funky new template. Don't mind the name. I made it up sometime last year and didn't delete it, and hey, it's come in handy now! Don't laugh at last year's post either.

fast times at Stanley Park...

So I ran/walked around it in 1 hour 15 minutes. I think that was about 10 km, even with the shortcut at the totems... if not, probably 9? Still not bad, if it was actually 9 then at that pace I would have equalled/bettered my best Sun Run time of 98 minutes from 2003. Either way, toots to me: I got to run along the Seawall in cool but comfortable weather, except there were leaves and stuff all over the place that were wet and got stuck to the bottom of my shoes and were kicked back somehow to the backs of my legs (good thing I was wearing track pants). I made myself run 5 minutes and walk 5 minutes almost continually, mostly goading myself to keep running until the end of the song that was playing on my MD player. As luck would have it the batteries died just as I was returning to my car, so quite fortunate about that.

The AttentionWhore has suggested that I keep a log of healthy/unhealthy eating and stuff, in my effort to improve my health which i think is a great idea! But I'm going to set up another blog for it, so stay tuned.

The reasons why I am doing this are many-fold:
1. to look/feel better
a. lose five-ten-fifteen pounds
b. improve self-esteem
2. to train for the Sun Run (my eleventh!)
a. improve cardio endurance
b. improve speed and lengthen stride
3. erm... just to see how long it takes for me to break and order fries at McD's

Let me state for the record: I'm not doing this to 'catch a man'. However I will not be held accountable for it if I do. Pleh.

Spent the rest of Saturday doing laundry and partially de-cluttering. I have filled a full garbage bags of clothes for Salvation Army, Developmental Disabilities, or Canadian Diabetes - whomever calls first. Man, I have a lot of clothes. (And now, still on the lookout for more... argh!) Then watched 3 hours of PBS: mostly BBC comedies - The Thin Blue Line, Are You Being Served, and that one with Judy Dench, something about the second time around? Funny. Pretty boring Saturday night though.

Man, sometimes teenagers just annoy me...

...with their low-rise jeans and outfits they just should not wear but do because they still have that pack mentality about fitting in...

BUT SOMEDAYS you come across a few that make you smile. I was self-indulgently reading my own blog and happened to click the 'next blog' link in the top right corner and found Kathryn's Blog. She has dogs and likes to write stories and has a top locker in the hallway, and has apparently 'outed' David for liking Ally!

Good times ;0)

More fun with US Customs officers at YVR...

So I went to San Francisco this past weekend, had a great time! I'm glad my experience at Customs didn't dampen the mood for the rest of the weekend. Got 'harrassed' again, mostly because I didn't like the guy's attitude to my answers - it's not like I was being a jerk, I just wanted to get on my plane! (Luckily I was an hour early because the flight was 20 minutes late leaving and I got to skip the line-up for check-in).

"What is your business in the US?"
"Going for a visit."
"Who lives at this address?" (in San Jose, written on the Customs Declaration form)
"My friend Mark."
"Your boyfriend?"
"No..."
"Friend, huh..."
"YES"
"You sure?"
"Yes."
"When was the last time you were in the US?"
"August."
"What were you doing then?"
"Visiting friends."
"Did you fly there?"
"No I drove"
"Do you always use this passport when crossing the border?"
"Yes"
"Who do you work for?"

... and on it went ... man... I can't catch a break with these guys... I mean if I had thought it was easier to say "Yeah he's my boyfriend" I would have, but knowing me, I'd probably get all flustered with the snowball effect of lies and then I'd be stripsearched and dog-sniffed for bombs or cocaine or whatever. So nevermind that. Meanwhile, on the way back, Canada Customs was a bit nicer as usual. No offence to Americans... but seriously... lighten up! Sheesh.

Anyway, the trip was nice, we did a lot of driving - through downtown SF, out to Napa Valley, then back to downtown SF where we walked all over the place (e.g. North Beach to Chinatown to the Four Seasons to use the bathroom, to Union Square, back to North Beach and down to Fishermans' Wharf and back to North Beach again... and no blisters!). On Sunday we went out to Monterey, and on Monday we went to visit Junko & Mark's buddy Doug at Stanford, then took the 'long road' to SF. Near Golden Gate Park I tripped on some steps and twisted my ankle. But we pressed on, hitting the tallest vantage points in the city to take pics and whatnot. Tried to make it an early night but *someone* had to do some work so ended up only getting about two hours' worth of sleep because I had to get up at 4:00 AM for a 7:10 AM flight. Woohoo!

Pictures... online... click the pic above, or here...

PS: online thanks to Mark for being my chauffeur/guide throughout the weekend. ;0)

Ski Trip 2005

Feeling out interest on who is interested in going on a ski weekend with a bunch of cool people comprised mainly of UBC Geog grads and their anciliary friends. Whistler, Sun Peaks, Silverstar, or Mt. Baker... or maybe Manning Park?... or maybe Apex? Anyway, if you or you'sall are interested e-mail me or leave comments with contact info. We're trying to see if getting a bus is cost-efficient (and not just because I work for a certain bus company.)

Dates are flexible, could be New Years' Weekend Dec 31-Jan 3; Jan 7-9, or maybe sometime in February or March.

Happy Mussiversary!

Happy 1-year anniversary to Junko and David, who were married in the rain on a grassy knoll in Stanley Park last year. Good times!

Showdown with a squirrel

It only lasted a couple of moments, but it was enough to back up traffic 5 cars long... I left Stanley Park this morning after an inspirational run (ha!), driving towards Beach Avenue, when two squirrels chasing each other appeared in front of me. One decided to cross the street, the other one stayed behind. So I slowed down and stopped, and instead of the squirrel continuing across the street, it stopped and stared at me for a few seconds. Wondering what to do next, I contemplated honking at it, but then some bikers passed by and it scooted off.

Speaking of scooters, there were lots out today. I should go find out who rents them.

Also visited Costco today, and what I saw there was bound to happen... knock-off Lululemon yoga pants and shirts... at less than half the price... suckers! Although as the proud owner of some Lululemon pieces I suppose I am mocking myself... but at least there weren't any snotty sales staff asking me if I knew about how they arranged their clothing.
